Charges Filed Against CATS Driver

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say the man behind the wheel of this CATS bus failed to yield when he collided with bicyclist Todd Weaver on South Tryon. Weaver died in the crash on October 14. Jerry Miller will be charged with Misdemeanor Death by Motor Vehicle.

Weaver was an avid cyclist who was on his way from work to his home in Concord when it happened. He was 36, married, with two children.

CATS officials say Miller was involved in a minor accident uptown earlier that day, and was on his way back to the CATS garage when this crash happened.

A spokesperson for CATS, which has since let Miller go, says he had five previous wrecks since 2001, including twice hitting utility poles and once rear-ending a truck.

Weaver’s brother Mark who lives in Dayton, Ohio told us over the phone today:

“Nothing is going to bring Todd back. What’s important is that everyone takes responsibility for their actions. I’m pleased that the D.A.’s office has filed charges and that the police department did their investigation.”

From recorded broadcast, December 21, 2005.
